How to Write a Capital T in Cursive

  1. Start left of centre near cap height and sweep a wide curve to the right.
  2. Bring the stroke back left into the stem.
  3. Pull the stem down to the baseline.
  4. Finish with a small flick to the right.

The capital T does not join forward, so a gap after it is correct.

How to Write a Lowercase t in Cursive

  1. Start on the baseline and rise to about three quarters of the ascender height.
  2. Come straight back down to the baseline.
  3. Exit to the right along the baseline.
  4. Add the crossbar last, just above x-height.

The t is a half-height letter. Taking it to the full ascender line makes it an l with a bar.

Cursive t vs Cursive l

Uncrossed, a t is simply a short l β€” same upward stroke, same return. Two things separate them: the t stops around three quarters of the ascender height while the l goes the whole way, and the t has a bar. Because the bar is added after the word is written, a forgotten crossbar genuinely does turn the letter into an l, which is why tall can end up reading as lall.

Joining t to the Next Letter

The t exits on the baseline and joins easily. The complication is the crossbar in a word with more than one t: in letter or bottle the two stems sit side by side and a single long bar drawn across both is normal and readable. Crossing them separately is also correct, just slower.

Common Mistakes with Cursive T

  • Crossing as you go. Finish the word first, then bar every t.
  • Full ascender height. That makes it an l.
  • A bar placed too high. The crossbar sits just above x-height, not at the top of the stem.
  • Looping the stem. The t stem is a narrow up-and-down, not an open loop.
