Cursive U Stroke Order
How to Write a Capital U in Cursive
- Start below cap height with a small curl and drop to the baseline.
- Curve along the baseline and rise to cap height on the right.
- Bring the second stroke down to the baseline.
- Exit with a small flick to the right.
The capital U is two strokes joined at the bottom, not a single curve. A one-piece U reads as a V.
How to Write a Lowercase u in Cursive
- Start at x-height and drop to the baseline for the first valley.
- Rise back to x-height.
- Drop again for the second valley.
- Rise and exit along the baseline, low.
Two valleys, exactly like a w. The exit height is the only thing separating them.
Cursive u vs Cursive w
Both are two valleys inside the x-height, drawn identically. The difference is the finish: the u rises and exits along the baseline, while the w closes with a small loop at the top of the x-height and hands off from there. Nothing about the body of the letter distinguishes them β a reader is looking at where the pen leaves.
Joining u to the Next Letter
The u exits low on the baseline, which makes it one of the easiest letters to join out of β every following letter starts from its normal entry stroke. This is the practical advantage it has over w, and it is why us and up flow while ws sequences do not exist comfortably in handwriting.
Common Mistakes with Cursive U
- Exiting high. A u that finishes at the top of the x-height is a w.
- Rounded valley bottoms. The valleys come to a point; rounding them makes a run of u's unreadable.
- Three valleys. That is a w.
- A one-piece capital. The capital U needs two distinct downstrokes.

Cursive U FAQ
What is the cursive U?
The cursive U is the joined-up form of the letter U. The capital is two full-height downstrokes joined by a curve at the baseline; the lowercase is two valleys inside the x-height that finish on the baseline. Online, “cursive U” also means the copy-and-paste characters (π° and π) above.
How do you write u in cursive?
In short: down to the baseline, up to x-height, down again, then up and out along the baseline. Two valleys, low exit. Steps and diagram are above.
What is the difference between a cursive u and a cursive w?
Only where the stroke ends. Both are two valleys; the u exits along the baseline, the w exits with a small loop at the top of the x-height. The bodies are identical.
Why is my cursive unreadable in words like ‘unusual’?
Because u, n, m and i are all built from the same valley and arch shapes, and a word made mostly of them becomes a row of identical strokes. Keep the valley points sharp and add a little extra space between letters.
Can I copy and paste a cursive U?
Yes. Every U above is a Unicode character, not an image, so clicking copies real text that survives being pasted into fields that lock the font.
