How to Write a Capital V in Cursive

  1. Start below cap height with a small entry curl.
  2. Drop in a straight diagonal to a point on the baseline.
  3. Rise in a straight diagonal back to cap height.
  4. Finish with a small curl to the right at the top.

Sharp point at the bottom. A rounded capital V is a capital U.

How to Write a Lowercase v in Cursive

  1. Start at x-height and drop in a straight line to a point on the baseline.
  2. Rise straight back up to x-height.
  3. Close with a small loop at the top.
  4. Exit from that loop, at x-height, not from the baseline.

Like b, o and w, the v hands off from the top of the x-height.

Cursive v vs Cursive u

One valley each, and the same overall footprint, so readers separate them on two cues. The v comes to a sharp point at the baseline while the u is rounded, and the v exits high at x-height while the u exits low along the baseline. Rounding a v's point while also dropping its exit produces a letter that is simply a u.

Joining v to the Next Letter

The v is one of the four lowercase letters β€” with b, o and w β€” that exit at the top of the x-height. Anything following has to be entered from above, which is why ove and ive endings feel awkward at speed. Tall letters after a v are easy; round letters are the difficult case.

Common Mistakes with Cursive V

  • A rounded bottom. That makes it a u.
  • Exiting at the baseline. Also makes it a u.
  • Two valleys. That is a w.
  • An oversized top loop. Keep the exit curl small or the v reads as a b.

What is the cursive V?

The cursive V is the joined-up form of the letter V: a single sharp valley in both cases. The capital spans cap height to the baseline and finishes with a curl; the lowercase sits in the x-height and exits with a small loop at the top. Online, “cursive V” also means the copy-and-paste characters (𝒱 and 𝓋) above.

How do you write v in cursive?

In short: down to a sharp point on the baseline, straight back up to x-height, and close with a small loop that exits high. The high exit is the part people miss. Steps and diagram are above.

What is the difference between a cursive v and a cursive u?

The v has a pointed bottom and exits at the top of the x-height; the u is rounded and exits along the baseline. Both cues have to be right or the letters merge.

Why is v awkward to join in cursive?

Because it exits high. Only b, o, v and w do this, so the letter after a v has to be dropped into from above instead of risen into from the baseline.
