How Our Reddit Username Generator Works
There is no AI behind this page and no connection to Reddit. Reddit usernames are assembled in your browser from five ingredients:
- Your word — or nothing. The box is empty by default, so the generator pairs two vocabulary words with nothing personal in them. If you type a word it is kept whole, cleaned to letters and numbers, and used as one half of the name.
- Reddit vocabulary. Each of the eight styles has its own hand-written list — lurker, commenter and bystander for anonymous; segfault, kernel and regex for nerdy; capybara, possum and axolotl for animals — so a throwaway result never borrows a hobby word by accident.
- Comment-section patterns. Adjective _ noun, adjective _ animal, hobby roles, throwaway markers, the/not/just prefixes, enthusiast and enjoyer suffixes, and join-year numbers. Patterns rotate within a batch so you never get 24 versions of the same idea.
- Reddit-safe defaults. Symbols are off and the separator is an underscore, so every result uses only letters, numbers and underscores — Reddit rejects periods and everything else. Names are capped at 20 characters by the vocabulary.
- Favorites. The heart saves a name to your browser's localStorage. Nothing is sent to a server, and the generator cannot check whether a u/ name is free — the sign-up form tells you instantly.
Reddit Username Rules — and Why You Cannot Change It
Reddit usernames are 3 to 20 characters of letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens. No periods, no spaces, no symbols, no emoji — and, unlike almost every other platform, no changes, ever: the u/ name you pick at sign-up is the one your account keeps. (Reddit added a separate editable display name in 2023, but the u/ handle underneath is fixed.) Because Reddit is searchable and comments last for years, the second rule is unwritten but stronger: nothing in the name should identify you. Reddit's own help pages recommend against using your real name, and most long-time users follow the two-word anonymous pattern this page generates by default.
